Which way are rings to be installed?

All rings are to be installed with the marks facing up.

The ring with the silver face is the top ring, the 2nd one is the dark grayish ring. Make sure you install them with the dots facing up and use .022” end gap for the top and .017-.024” for the 2nd. Ring, for street turbo use

  1. But the upper 2 rings are dissimilar – which one goes at the top? The red/yellow chromed or the yellow banded black cast ring?

  3. Hi,

I just received my piston kit and was trying to get the end gap measurements right. I ordered the piston set for the Toyota 4ag 16 valve (3710000). The ring set part number I received was (1515403228). I will also run 100+ octane on a high boost turbo setup. What gaps should i run?
    Thanks ahead ………..

  4. The top ring should have a minimum gap of .022″ (ring with silver face)

The 2nd ring can have .017 to .024″ of gap (dark grey ring)

The oil ring can be set up any where from .020 to .060

Let me know if you need any thing else

  11. Will be using your pistons made for a MazdaSpeed 3 turbo. Machine shop has asked for the recommended bore surface finish (RMS) and cylinder to piston clearance. Can you supply this info?

    • I would recommend the following for end gaps

.022″ minimum for the top .018″ to .028″ on the top ring (.018″ being the minimum) .020″ on the oil rails, don’t have to touch the expander

      Hope this helps

  16. i have an 89mm bore toyota 3tc.i plan on running na most of the time with an ocassional spray(175hp).what ring gap do u sugest i know u suggest .22 top .18-.28 middle, and .20 for oil rings.how ever that is for a turbo setup not wat im really wat im building.

    thanks in advance john

Comment by joao gandarez | December 29, 2010 | Reply

    • Well, you will still be spraying it and only because you won’t spray the whole time doesn’t mean that you can go with less end gap, you have to gap the rings for those occassions when you will spray it even if it is only 1% of the time! I would suggest staying around the same end gap, maybe a thou or two less, but no more than that.

      Hope this helps

  17. hey there i have your piston kit for the 4ag part number 3710000 i was wondering the block i will be useing is the 20v block will the rings that came in that kit work? the block is unbored all stock. I cant get the top ring gap close to the min of .022 the closest one i can get is .015. Any help is much appreciated thanks

    Comment by kyle | June 28, 2011 | Reply

    • As long as the bore of the block is the same, it will be ok… Top end gap should be ok at .022″, the 2nd ring you can rung with a minimum of .017″ but you can gap them as much as .025″…

      Hope this helps

  19. Hi — I have been in contact with the UK people who are very helpfully looking into the Arias pistons i got from a MINI specialist .. They are 9.25:1 77.5mm for a Rotrex with boost of around 20psi ..

I was sent NPR rings with them and no instructions on the gaps !!

I have seen on here 0.022” for the top and 0.017-0.024” for the 2nd — Is all that still relevant

    Oil ring – leave ?

Comment by nigel brown | December 9, 2011 | Reply

    • Hello Lorna, I would recommend .020″ minimum for the top, .017″ to .024″ for the 2nd, should be able to leave oil rings (normally .015″ minimum)

      Hope this helps

  20. I have a set of Arias pistons that i’ll be using in a methanol engine (4G63) Its duty will be 1/4 mile track use only, ran on Methanol @ 45-50psi. Compression ratio is 10.5:1 (custom piston set) in a 3.386″ bore. Considering the duty and the use of methanol, what PTW or Ring gap equations/ values should I be abiding by?

    • Hello there… La medida del bloque debe de ser 81.99mm (3.228″) y esto le dara un poco mas de .003″ de clearance.
